SUMMARY:The Serial Killer Who Came to Tacoma
DESCRIPTION:Long before the term serial killer became part of everyday language\, one man left a dark and mysterious mark on Tacoma history. \nIn 1947\, Jake Bird was convicted of murdering a Tacoma mother and her daughter. After a trial that lasted just three days\, he was sentenced to death. But the story didn’t end there. Because while he was awaiting execution\, Bird claimed responsibility for an astonishing 44 murders across 12 states\, transforming his case from a local tragedy into one of America’s most chilling criminal legends. \nThen came the twist that would make Jake Bird infamous. \nBefore his execution\, Bird was given the opportunity to make a final statement. Looking at the men involved in his case\, he reportedly declared: \n“All you guys who had anything to do with this case are going to die before I do.” \nThe remark became known as The Jake Bird Hex. \nWithin a year\, five men connected to the case—including the Superior Court judge\, Bird’s attorney\, two police officers\, and the court reporter—had all died of heart attacks. Coincidence? Curse? The debate continues to this day. \nIn 1948\, Jake Bird was hanged at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. Yet nearly eighty years later\, his story remains one of Tacoma’s strangest and most enduring mysteries.

DESCRIPTION:Ever feel downtown Tacoma whispering? Streetcars once rolled out from the transportation barn\, carrying the city forward. A child was christened on the girders of the Rust Building – steel and blessing\, high above the street. Department stores where you shopped for everything from washing machines to violins to jewelry\, you will be fascinated to hear about Washington’s first female attorney and first female general manager. And yes\, some buildings are haunted.

SUMMARY:History of 6th Avenue
DESCRIPTION:When Tacoma’s streetcars were still humming and the Narrows Bridge gateway began here\, 6th Avenue was already doing what it still does best. Moving people through\, connecting neighborhoods\, keeping the city in motion. Kmart is gone. Shakey’s is gone. PhotoMat\, the tiny booth-like time capsule you drove past without thinking is gone too. But the road stayed. Come hear the story of 6th Avenue\, decade by decade\, as it keeps changing but never stops bustling. \n
